Design your Fashion Blog
Noting is more important to one ‘s personal evolution than the ability of searching for an upper level, for a great idea, and when find it, to go for it and recognize it’s value. This may be the secret of following your passion with a great deal of ambition…

Romanian fashion illustrator Elena Sofia Tinis, is one of those passionate people. She has recently moved to New York, United States to work on her biggest dream: Become a Professional Fashion Illustrator/Designer
When I found Sofia’s illustrations I immediately added them to my inspirational fashion illustration storyboard. Why? Because of her gorgeous style of drawing and also because of her perseverance to follow her passion for fashion.
This is the reason why I invited her to a virtual cup of … fashion illustration talking about the process of her creation, how attending to competitions has benefit her fashion design career
Enjoy!

For me fashion illustration didn’t came across over night. I loved to draw since I was a child. The decisive moment was in ‘90 when I saw one of my sister’s sketchbook. I was very impressed and I said: “Someday, I’ll be able to draw beautiful ladies like my sister.” And I did. Since then, this became my biggest passion, but this is what I actually do in my spare time.

- Working in the fashion illustration industry or just a passion for her?
I’d love to say that I’m working only as a fashion illustrator but unfortunately I earn my living with a certain job. I have some collaborations with USA Agencies, where I sell my illustrations.
I also keep in touch with some magazines from Romania for which I design some illustrations, ( like Cosmopolitan ). But one of the biggest reasons that I left Romania was because fashion illustration there is not appreciated like it should be.

- The stories behind her illustrations
Each illustration has it’s story. I use relax myself when I create a composition. It’s awesome when I review each sketch and I remember what movie I was seeing when I was drawing, where I was traveling, or what inspired me to draw that illustration.
- The process of her creation
I start with a sketch with pencils ( usually 2B ) to outline my idea after that, I work on volume and texture with different other materials ( it depends on the material ). Then I add some color accents and let it to dry.
Finally depending on the texture (hair, leather, etc.) I use softer pencils (4B above) or crayons.
In the end, “to be in the new ERA”, I use fine accents of Photoshop to add finishes.

- Methods used to apply colors
In what concerns the techniques I use to illustrate, I prefer to combine different mediums. Basically I am working with traditional media then combine it with new technology.
I use color pencils and watercolor. On my opinion I strongly believe that Photoshop never can do such beautiful effects as a brush with watercolor.
I am addicted to traditional media. I don’t create very stylish artwork but try to represent realistically wear while retaining the basics of fashion sketches.
- How attending to competitions has benefit her career as fashion illustrator?
In 2007 I won a national contest with a costume collection. And in 2008 another national contest – INSPIRED Competition. I really believe that contests helped me a lot to start in the fashion design industry. Awards like visit the SIL/Paris or launch my first collection – “Toxic”, helped me enormously in my fashion career. And also it increased my confidence as a designer.

My biggest achievement was when I was recognized as a professional fashion illustrator. Fashion illustration it’s a useless activity for others, but still make life more beautiful for people like me.
- What advice do you have for a young who wants to be a fashion illustrator/ fashion designer?
If you have not reached that “something” that you acquired only after much effort and years of work, then change the field or seek help from professionals to learn what you can improve. The rest comes naturally. This goes for Fashion Illustration but also Fashion Design Industry.
- Thank you a lot Elena for your precious answers!
