Istanbul is considered a cultural center, being as full of history as Athens and Rome. It is the only city in the world situated both on Europe and Asia, and this also had a major influence in their traditional costumes. Also, Turkey has played an important role in the Silk Road history, so nowadays they are taking great advantages out of this.
Also, the ottoman prints, decorations or accessories are very popular worldwide, so Turkey not only have a powerful and well conserved traditional costume, but it has also influenced other nationality’s clothes and it has also an important role in today’s fashion, many modern clothes being inspired from the European-Asian country. Turks pay attention to the details; they’re clothes are all about embroidery, high quality fabrics and refined accessories.
Turkish traditional costume has changed slowly, during history. A major role in this change can be attributed to the cultural contacts of the Turkic peoples over the centuries. Also, they kept extending in Europe and Asia and conquering different cultural countries, which have influenced their clothes as well.
Surface decoration and the way costume elements are arranged on the body serve as a means of communication, indicating membership in tribal or village groups, and myriad other anthropological messages.
The main materials used in the basic Turkish traditional costume are wool, silk and cotton. To accommodate to the climate, they add layers to the so-called basic dress. Common items in their dress are: salvars, gomlek (chemise), ucetek (three-skirted cloak), sleeveless vests, belts, elaborate headgear and so on.
It’s still a lot to say about their traditional clothes, but I think it’s enough for the moment. Now I would like to share some photos with you, so you can make an idea about Turkish traditional costumes:
Because of the industrialization progress from 1960, Turks, as well as everybody from all over the world, swapped their traditional clothes with the modern ones. Nowadays, only few people wear traditional costumes. They can rarely be seen in traditional clothes in the rural zone, at special events or at dance shows.
Still, their influence can be found in nowadays fashion in a modern interpretation. Do you remember the huge impact salvars had 2 years ago? And the list may go on.
